Cardinal Health is a prominent American multinational company specializing in health care services and products. Headquartered in Dublin, Ohio, Cardinal Health operates as one of the largest distributors of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies in the United States, serving over 100,000 locations. The company was founded in 1971 by Robert D. Walter as Cardinal Foods, initially focusing on food wholesaling before pivoting to the pharmaceutical distribution sector in the late 1970s.
Cardinal Health’s operations are divided into two main segments: Pharmaceutical and Medical. The Pharmaceutical segment includes the distribution of brand-name and generic drugs, specialty pharmaceuticals, and over-the-counter health products. This division also offers services like medication therapy management, pharmacy automation solutions, and nuclear pharmacy services. The Medical segment focuses on distributing medical, surgical, and laboratory products, as well as providing services related to supply chain management and inventory optimization.
Innovation and strategic acquisitions have been crucial to Cardinal Health’s growth. Significant acquisitions include the purchase of Baxter International’s pharmaceutical distribution business in 1996 and the acquisition of Cordis, a manufacturer of medical devices, in 2015. These moves have bolstered the company’s portfolio and expanded its global reach.
Cardinal Health is also committed to improving healthcare through technology and data analytics, striving to enhance supply chain efficiency and patient outcomes. The company has implemented various programs to address issues such as the opioid crisis, working to ensure responsible distribution and usage of controlled substances.
Despite facing challenges such as regulatory scrutiny and competition from other major players like McKesson and AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health continues to play a critical role in the healthcare industry. With a workforce of over 50,000 employees, the company remains dedicated to its mission of delivering essential healthcare products and services efficiently and safely.
